Water is a transparent, tasteless, odorless and nearly colorless liquid that is the main constituent of Earth's streams, lakes and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms. It is an essential resource for human survival and much of the world's population lacks access to clean drinking water. Water has many important functions in the body, including regulating temperature, lubricating joints, and transporting nutrients and waste products. It also has physical and chemical properties that make it unique, such as the ability to dissolve many substances and to exist in three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) at normal Earth temperatures and pressures.
